Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is caused by a hormone imbalance in the ovaries. The ovaries are covered in a large number of small follicles and are the ovaries are bigger than normal. Due to the immature follicles patients rarely ovulate with a mature egg. This can make achieving a pregnancy difficult for PCOS patients. It is actually a very common condition and symptoms may start during the teenage years. Some women are unaware they have the condition if they suffer with no symptoms. PCOS patients may also suffer with other health problems later in life such as type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

Symptoms

  • Anovulation – no periods or very irregular cycles
  • Increased levels of the male hormone androgen, which causes excessive facial and body hair growth

Losing weight through a healthy balanced diet can help to improve symptoms. Also, medication will help excessive hair growth, irregular periods and improve fertility.

Your fertility specialist may also consider ovarian drilling.
