Does holistic care have a part to play in Infertility treatment?

There are many arguments about the effectiveness of alternative medicine versus modern western medicine when it comes to fertility. There is no question that modern medicine is the only way to treat infertility successfully. This is backed up by the World Health Organisation statistics. However, there is also evidence that traditional medicine can be enhanced with holistic therapies.

Physiological factors have an impact on fertility

Stress can impact ovulation, as can an unhealthy lifestyle. This is where alternative therapy can play an important part in your overall treatment.

Many clinics now offer forms of holistic care to compliment traditional medicine to help couples address their infertility. A recent study of 428 couples across 8 different clinics, found that a third had used some form of alternative medicine. This included acupuncture, herbal therapy, yoga, massage, and meditation.

The main advantage of this approach is that integrative medicine is an effective means to reduce stress, and we know that stress can cause problems with fertility. Therefore acupuncture, massage, meditation and other relaxation techniques can reduce the stress associated with infertility and, aid conception.

So how does it work?

Since the turn of the century medical experts have been acquiring a deeper understanding of the mind/body connection. This may be a placebo effect, but it is clear that holistic therapies DO have an impact on fertility.

Also, different complementary medicines are likely to work in different ways. For instance, acupuncture stimulates the release of brain chemicals to promote blood flow to the uterus.

The significance of the impact of an integrated approach also varies with the type of complementary medicine utilised. For instance, one study showed that acupuncture potentially increased positive outcomes by 10%. [BMJ. 2008 Mar 8; 336(7643):545-9]. Another study found that giving acupuncture on the day of the embryo transfer increased the likelihood of pregnancy.

So an integrated approach utilising holistic therapies is well worth considering. However, it is important not to try this independently of your modern medicine programme!

Ideally your clinic will be able to advise you on the best integrated approach that suits you. Ensure your physician is aware of any type of complementary therapy you are undergoing in conjunction with your medical treatment
