Fishy on a dishy!

Eating food rich in protein can positively affect the chances of women having live births following advanced treatment with Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART). This is the finding of a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which also suggests that the consumption of fish can increase the likelihood of live births for couples who have undergone ART.

The aim of the study, carried out by researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital Fertility Center, was to investigate the relation between intake of meat and other protein-rich foods from pre-conception to birth together with outcomes of infertility treatment with ART.

With this in mind, a total of 351 women enrolled in the study and underwent 598 ART cycles for infertility treatment. Protein intake (meat, eggs, beans, nuts and soy) was assessed and compared with ART outcomes.

The researchers found that fish intake, in particular was positively related to the proportion of cycles resulting in live birth. As the fish intake increased the probability of live birth increased from 34.2% to 47.7%. Not only that, but replacing meat (or other sources of protein) with fish in two of more meals per week also had an estimated positive effect.

In conclusion, the researchers say that the results show that that fish consumption may be related to a higher probability of live births following infertility treatment with ART.

…………It may be time to revisit those dietary choices.
