Considering that infertility is such a huge problem, one would automatically think that there are lots of films and documentaries showing the personal sides of the problem that couples experience. However, this is simply not the case.
In actuality, such films are few and far between. Last year’s acclaimed documentary, ‘One More Shot’, about one US couple’s struggle with infertility is now available to stream on Netflix. The film follows Noah and Maya Moskin, a couple who met as film students, married and decided to make a vlog of what they thought would be normal journey towards having children.
However, what should have been a five minute video turned into a full-length documentary about their personal struggle with infertility. From the beginning they tried having a baby naturally, but like so many other couples in the same situation, it didn’t work. Recognising that infertility isn’t really something people talk about, they decided to make a movie about the challenge they faced to share with others.
Together with the help of a friend they filmed in detail all the highs and lows, of which there were many of their infertility journey over 3 years in Los Angeles. The documentary covers the injections, visits to the doctor, procedures and very emotional moments like receiving those clinic calls after the two-week wait.
Noah and Maya also interviewed others who struggled to build their families, highlighting the many paths to parenthood that individuals and couples pursue. The movie title is appropriate, pertaining to the literal injection shot scenes, and the ‘one last shot’ attempt at parenthood the couples sometimes face. It resonates with other infertile couples that face the painful choices of should they try again and how will they afford it?
A reviewer for RESOLVE (the US National Infertility Association) had this to say about it: “One More Shot is beneficial for the public at large, where too much ignorance, stigma and insensitivity about infertility still exists. One More Shot felt very real, which is why I think it should be required viewing for the loved ones of people that are struggling to make their dream of parenthood come true. Put yourself in our shoes…. How would YOU feel?”
