PGD is useful when a couple knows there is a family history of genetic disease that might be passed on to their child, if you have had to end a previous pregnancy because of genetic disease, if you already have a child with a genetic condition or if you know of a family chromosome problem.
The embryos are tested for genetic diseases; currently there are over 400 conditions that can be identified through PGD. Similar to PGS, a small selection of cells are taken from the embryo, this can lead to damage to the embryo meaning they cannot be implanted in to the female partners womb.
Some couples also chose to have PGD for family balancing as this can also determine the sex of the embryo.
