PTT is a diagnostic test on embryos, specifically to help children with serious blood disorders.
For some families who already have a child suffering with life limiting blood disorders such as beta thalassaemia, Fanconi’s anaemia or Diamond Blackfan anaemia, the treatment may involve a transfusion of stem cells from a matched donor.
If a matched donor isn’t found from a close relative, then parents may try having another child and use PTT to find the right embryo that is a tissue match to help the older sibling.
In conjunction with PGD, parents can select to use an embryo that is a tissue match for their other child but also find the embryo that doesn’t carry the condition itself.
